Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby wish the very best for Cardinal Donald W. Wuerl and does proclaim December 2010 to be “Cardinal Donald W. Wuerl Month”

WHEREAS, Donald W. Wuerl is well known to Pittsburghers as a native son, with an early education at St. Mary of the Mount parish and school; and
 
WHEREAS,  Reverend Wuerl furthered his education at Mount St. Mary's Seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio and Catholic University of America in Washington D.C., and studies in Rome where he obtained his doctorate in theology in 1974; and
 
WHEREAS, after being ordained on December 17, 1966, Reverend Wuerl's first assignment was at  St. Rosalia Church in Greenfield, and among other duties served as secretary to John Cardinal Wright in Vatican City, another Cardinal who spent many years as a Bishop of Pittsburgh; and as
 
WHEREAS, Reverend Wuerl was consecrated a bishop on December 3, 1985 and appointed auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Seattle, then returned to Pittsburgh to serve for 18 years as bishop of the Diocese of Pittsburgh, and was named Archbishop of Washington D.C. in 2006; and.
 
WHEREAS, Bishop Wuerl, living out his commitment to the Church, his deep love of Christ and his reputation as a leading intellectual of the Church, is always diplomatic with sensitive issues; and
 
WHEREAS, Pope Benedict XVI selected Archbishop Wuerl to join the College of Cardinals as a special advisor to the Pope, given special assignments and, at age 69, became eligible to vote in conclave for the next Pope; and
 
WHEREAS, the celebration began on November 20 when Cardinal Donald W. Wuerl was given his red hat and Cardinal's ring; and
 
WHEREAS, Cardinal Donald Wuerl will remain Archbishop of Washington, D.C., and will be flying to and speaking with Rome very often;  and
 
WHEREAS, the people of Pittsburgh are proud of our native son who has done so much good work;
