WHEREAS fighting fires is one of the most hazardous professions, requiring physical strength, stamina, extensive training, courage, and concern for the welfare of our citizens; and
WHEREAS in addition to their daily service to communities, fire fighters across the nation have joined the Muscular Dystrophy Association for over 55 years in the fight against neuromuscular disease; and
WHEREAS City of Pittsburgh Fire Fighters collected $72,000 throughout the community with their 2008 Fill-the-Boot campaign for MDA; and
WHEREAS the Muscular Dystrophy Association is extremely grateful to the City of Pittsburgh Fire Fighters for their support and dedication; and
WHEREAS the funds collected by the City of Pittsburgh Fire Fighters assist MDA in providing medical services at local clinics and help provide funding for summer camp, research grants, support groups, and public education seminars at no cost to local children and families; and
WHEREAS in honor of the efforts of the City of Pittsburgh Fire Fighters, the Muscular Dystrophy Association is sponsoring City of Pittsburgh Fire Fighters Appreciation Month; and
WHEREAS it is appropriate for all City of Pittsburgh residents to join the Muscular Dystrophy Association in this tribute to our fire fighters.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby wish to commend the City Fire Fighters for their efforts on behalf of the Muscular Dystrophy Association and declares the month of August 2009 to be City of Pittsburgh Fire Fighters Appreciation Month.
