WHEREAS, St. Bede Girls Varsity Basketball Team, the "Crusaders", consist of all eighth graders: Meghan Boltey, Emily Bush, Colleen Cwenar, Rachel Dzombak, Caroline Fitzgerald, Danielle Fiumara, Ashley Hall, Kelsey Olander, Emily Sheehan, Amanda Skoner and Ali Totten; and
WHEREAS, all the girls on the St. Bede Girls Varsity Basketball Team have played together since the 4th grade; and
WHEREAS, after entering the prestigious Sacred Heart Christmas Tournament, St. Bede defeated perennial powerhouses St. Alphonsus, St. Bonaventure and the host, Sacred Heart, to capture the Sacred Heart Christmas Tournament Championship trophy; and
WHEREAS, with their February 15, 2004 victory over Providence Heights Alpha, St. Bede completed the regular season undefeated in their section (12-0) and received the #1 seed in 2A North for the PIAA Diocesan Championship Tournament; and
WHEREAS, St. Bede defeated St. Gabriel's, St. Bonaventure and Sacred Heart in the playoffs to advance to the PIAA Diocesan Championship game against a heavily favored St. Bernard team from Mt. Lebanon. The final score was 26-23 when St. Bernard shot a 3-pointer at the buzzer; and
WHEREAS, Coaches John Bush and Assistant Coach Lars Olander successfully worked with the Varsity Girls constantly giving them the added confidence and skills needed in creating a winning team.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend St. Bede Girls Varsity Basketball Team on their extraordinary team spirit and team work, and congratulates them on their undefeated season and their advancement to the PIAA Diocesan Championship Tournament.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh declares April 6, 2004 "St. Bede Crusaders Girls Varsity Basketball Team Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
