WHEREAS, recognizing that literacy is the cornerstone of a child's intellectual, personal and cultural growth, for more than 80 years Scholastic has created quality products and services including Junior Scholastic, a current events magazine for students in grades 6 - 8 which supports social studies curriculums and promotes educational outreach by national contests and competitions; and
WHEREAS, hundreds of essays were submitted by students across the United States in Junior Scholastic's second annual "Hometown America" contest which encourages students to apply their geography, history, map-making and reading and writing skills to discover and share interesting historical, cultural and geographical facts about their hometown; and
WHEREAS, from these hundreds of 500 word essays from students describing what makes their hometown the perfect place to live, seven essays stood out; those of Matt El-Tahch, Jordan Englert, Danielle Gigliotti, Catie O'Malley, Lindsay Richardson, Marisa Rieber and Maria Rotunda; students of Michael Galuska of Brookline Regional Catholic School; and
WHEREAS, as the winners of Junior Scholastic's Hometown America Contest their reports were combined into a feature article which appeared in the May 9th issue of Junior Scholastic and will be read by millions of middle school students around the county who will now know about Pittsburgh's remarkable history and heritage and the many fun things and activities that make Pittsburgh the perfect hometown.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh recognizes the students of Brookline Regional Catholic and congratulates this terrific team for their well-researched and interesting winning entry and their enthusiastic support of our city.
