WHEREAS, on April 29, 2007, Dennis Bair and Jill Grinberg James will be inducted into the Western Pennsylvania Jewish Sports Hall of Fame at the twenty-fifth annual induction banquet; and
WHEREAS, since its inception, the Western Pa Jewish Sports Hall of Fame has raised over $300,000 to fund youth sports programming in Pittsburgh's 14th and 15th Wards; and
WHEREAS, the Hall of Fame honors Jewish high school, college and professional athletes from Western Pennsylvania for their outstanding performance in various athletic fields; and
WHEREAS, Dennis Bair is a professional baseball player and Jill Grinberg James competed in tennis at both the high school and collegiate levels; and
WHEREAS, this year's banquet will also honor Lenny Silberman, Executive Director of the North American Maccabi Games, with the Hershey STRIVE Award and Bob Helfer with the Ziggy Kahn Memorial Award for his dedication to youth sports programming in the 14th and 15th Wards; and
WHEREAS, the Jewish Community Center will receive the Manny Gold Humanitarian Award in recognition of the continuous support for athletic and cultural programs that the center has provided for people of all ages over the past 80 years; and
WHEREAS, other organizations that have received funds from the Western Pa Sports Hall of Fame include 14th Ward Baseball, B'Nai B'rith Youth Organization, Community Day School, Emma Kaufman Camp, Hillel, Squirrel Hill Baseball and Yeshiva.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh congratulates Jewish Sports Hall of Fame inductees Dennis Bair and Jill Grinberg James, Hershey STRIVE Awardee Lenny Silberman, and Ziggy Kahn Awardee Bob Helfer; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby declares April 29, 2007, "Jewish Sports Hall of Fame Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
