Title: NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby wishes to show its support for the Grace Memorial Presbyterian Church on its 138th Anniversary, while additionally commending the Church community for their continued efforts to work for racial, social and economic justice, while simultaneously strengthening ecumenical bonds.

WHEREAS the Grace Memorial Church is the oldest African-American Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh and Allegheny County and is considered the "Mother Church" among African-American Presbyterians living within the Pittsburgh area; and
 
WHEREAS on November 19, 2006, at 10 a.m., Grace Memorial Presbyterian Church, located at 1000 Bryn Mawr Road in Pittsburgh's Hill District, will celebrate its 138th Anniversary with a Harvest Celebration; and
 
WHEREAS founded by Dr. Henry Highland Garnet, Grace Memorial Church was originally located in the present Miller School building, later moving to Arthur Street, Centre Avenue, and in the 1940's, to its present site in the Schenley Heights Community; and
 
WHEREAS the Grace Memorial Church community, led by Pastor Johnnie Monroe, continues to build a ministry of hope in the City of Pittsburgh and the Hill District.
