WHEREAS, Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens was founded in Schenley Park in 1893 as a gift to the City by Pittsburgh magnate and philanthropist Henry Phipps “to erect” something that will prove a source of instruction as well as pleasure to the people”; and,
WHEREAS, Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens is recognized as a National Register of Historic Places landmark, designed by the storied New York firm of Lord and Burnham as one of the nation’s finest and largest Victorian glasshouse exhibitories; and,
WHEREAS, Phipps is ranked among the nation’s top garden-conservatory experiences today and enriches the community by building pioneering, regenerative garden-scapes and structures to infuse innovation, technology and learning into its award winning operations, ground breaking research, leading edge education and outreach programs, providing new cultural opportunities to bolster the benefits of a garden community for all in our region and beyond; and,
WHEREAS, Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens has undertaken a Reimagining Phipps Improvement Program, featuring the restoration of the magnificent landmark glasshouse complex, bringing into full flower its Living Campus by the completion of the new Exhibit Stage Center; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and commend with gratitude the visionary national leadership of Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens exemplified by the completion of its new Exhibit Staging Center and Living Campus and honors the opening of the new Exhibit Staging Center and the debut of the Living Campus, benefitting all in our most livable City of Pittsburgh.
