Title: WHEREAS, the Old Stone Tavern, located in the West End neighborhood of the City of Pittsburgh, was built around 1782 and is considered the oldest commercial building left in the city; and,

WHEREAS, the Old Stone Tavern, located in the West End neighborhood of the City of Pittsburgh, was built around 1782 and is considered the oldest commercial building left in the city; and,

WHEREAS, a ledger dated between 1793 through 1797 is filled with detailed accounts of prominent men of the time, pioneer patrons, American Revolutionary soldiers, participants in the Whiskey Rebellion, and local farmers, workers and an Indian who visited the tavern; and,

WHEREAS, concerned about its deterioration and the possibility of it being demolished by a private owner, Pittsburgh's Old Stone Tavern (POST) Friends Trust, Inc. was formed and incorporated in December, 2013; and,

WHEREAS, the mission of POST Friends Trust is to secure ownership of the tavern and its property, and provide for its long-term preservation, and to educate the public regarding the tavern's significance in United States history; and,

WHEREAS, the group has been meeting monthly to discuss the tavern's history and ideas for its use. Norene Beatty, the President of POST Friends Trust, gives frequent talks to groups educating them about the Tavern and the history of the Whisky Revolution; and,

WHEREAS, in October, 2009, the City of Pittsburgh designated the Old Stone Tavern as an Historic Structure and in the fall of 2021, the Old Stone Tavern was sold to the Porter family who intends to save and restore the historic building; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and commend the Pittsburgh's Old Stone Tavern Friends Trust for their steadfast commitment to preserving the Old Stone Tavern and its history; and,

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, February 8, 2022 to be "Pittsburgh's Old Stone Tavern Friends Trust Inc. Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
