WHEREAS, the Western Pennsylvania Police Athletic League, a member of the National Association of Police Athletic Leagues, was founded in 1978; and
WHEREAS, the League was formed to offer constructive athletic opportunities to youth throughout the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, and all of Western Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, through sports and athletic training the League helps to build relationships between young people and law enforcement to foster trust and understanding on both sides; and
WHEREAS, every year the League holds a Golden Gloves youth boxing tournament and has sent several youth athletes all the way to the Olympic Trials for boxing; and
WHEREAS, on Saturday, February 9th the League hosted an invitational youth boxing match - "The Black & Gold Bouts" - with some of the best competitors in Canada;
WHEREAS, the League's motto is "Always For the Kids."

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize the Western Pennsylvania Police Athletic League for their dedication to providing athletic opportunities to Western Pennsylvania youth; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare February 9, 2013 to be "Western Pennsylvania Police Athletic League Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
