WHEREAS, more than 1.5 million Americans suffer from the effects of Parkinson’s disease (PD), an incurable neurological disorder; and,
WHEREAS, approximately 60,000 new cases of the disease are diagnosed each year in the United States; and,
WHEREAS, there are an estimated 10,000 people living with PD in Western Pennsylvania, giving it one of the highest rates in the country, per capita; and,
WHEREAS, for two decades, Parkinson Foundation Western Pennsylvania (PFWPA) has fought PD, and successfully served Parkinson patients by establishing support groups and activities, providing education and publicity concerning the disease, and providing support for research; and,
WHEREAS, The PFWPA recently moved to a new headquarters capable of offering more complete service; and,
WHEREAS, The PFWPA has added a significant number of new initiatives at its new site; and,
WHEREAS, please join the Parkinson Foundation Western Pennsylvania on Saturday, September 24. 2016, at the Highland Park Reservoir for their annual fundraiser walk “Step Forward Pittsburgh”; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby acknowledge and commend the Parkinson Foundation Western PA for its contributions to people with Parkinson disease, as well as its service to all of the citizens of Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Saturday, September 24, 2016, to be “PFWPA Step Forward Pittsburgh Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
