WHEREAS, on March 20, 2010, the United Way of Allegheny County and Family Communications, Inc. (FCI) are partnering to celebrate the birthday of Fred Rogers with "'Won't You Be My Neighbor?' Day"; and
WHEREAS, the United Way and FCI will use what would have been the 82nd birthday of Fred Rogers to promote a day of volunteering and encouraging people to volunteer their time on a more regular basis; and
WHEREAS, the organizations have created an electronic took kit to help people become more involved in the effort, including a list of activities and a "Caring Neighbor Checklist" of simple things people can do to be more neighborly to each other; and
WHEREAS, a dozen events and volunteer fairs will be hosted by museums, libraries and other non-profits in the Pittsburgh region over Friday and Saturday to honor the memory of Fred Rogers and reach out to people who are interested in volunteering; and
WHEREAS, as a part of the celebration, people are asked to wear their favorite sweater, as Mister Rodgers always did.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Council of the City of Pittsburgh recognizes the 82nd birthday of Fred Rodgers and thanks the United Way and Family Communications, Inc. for working to promote and extend his legacy of being a good neighbor; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby declares March 19, 2010, "'Won't You Be My Neighbor?' Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
