WHEREAS, Coaches vs. Cancer is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society, or ACS, and the National Association of Basketball Coaches; and,
WHEREAS, ACS is the largest private, non-governmental funder of cancer research in the country; and,
WHEREAS, Coaches vs. Cancer of Pittsburgh raises funds for the ACS Western Pennsylvania Chapter's numerous services, including connecting patients with social workers and speech-language pathologists, maintaining an equipment loan-closet free of charge to patients, providing transportation services for patients to attend clinics, resource-group meetings, and other events; and,
WHEREAS, Coaches vs. Cancer empowers coaches, their teams, and communities to join the fight against cancer by participating in awareness efforts, advocacy programs, and fundraising activities; and,
WHEREAS, guided by the Coaches vs. Cancer Council, participating coaches help people with cancer today and to find cures to end the disease tomorrow, and have raised more than $87 million to help the American Cancer Society's mission; and,
WHEREAS, in 2013, more than 4,000 college and high school basketball coaches nationwide participated in the Coaches vs. Cancer program, including local coaches from Duquesne University, Robert Morris University, and the University of Pittsburgh; and,
WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh chapter of the Coaches vs Cancer was founded in 2007; and,
WHEREAS, on Monday, September 29th, 2014, Coaches vs. Cancer of Pittsburgh will hold their annual Tip-Off Madness at Heinz Field to further empower and build support in the continued fight against cancer.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize Coaches vs. Cancer of Pittsburgh for their steadfast commitment to winning the fight against cancer.
