Whereas, Southwestern Pennsylvania AIDS Planning Coalition is holding a Prayer Breakfast and Press Conference for the Balm in Gilead Black Church Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS on Wednesday, March 1, 2006 in Market Square, Downtown Pittsburgh; and
Whereas, this will be the kick-off event for the Balm in Gilead Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS from March 5th, 2006 through March 11th, 2006; and
Whereas, Black Church Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS is the largest AIDS awareness program specifically designed to engage African Americans in a weeklong observance of the impact of HIV/AIDS on our community and the essential role of church in providing AIDS education, prevention and care; and
Whereas, the purpose of the Balm in Gilead Black Church Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS is to bring national attention to the role black churches are playing in the AIDS crisis and to encourage and empower more churches to step to the frontline to save our community from AIDS, one of the leading killers of black people worldwide; and
Whereas, the Balm in Gilead Black Church Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS seeks to pave the way for continuous mobilization and education for the implementation of AIDS prevention and support programs in our churches throughout the year.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council in the City of Pittsburgh recognizes and commends the Southwestern Pennsylvania AIDS Planning Coalition for continuing to educate the community on the affect of the HIV/AIDS virus.
BE IT FURTHUR RESOLVED, that the Council in the City of Pittsburgh declares March 5 through March 11, 2006 as "Balm in Gilead Black Church Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS" in the City of Pittsburgh.
