WHEREAS, cancer will strike approximately 71,800 people in Pennsylvania this year; and
WHEREAS, the daffodil is the first flower of spring, and since 1973 has been the American Cancer Society's symbol of hope that cancer can be beaten; and
WHEREAS, 2008 marks the 35th anniversary of the American Cancer Society's Daffodil Days Program, with March 24 to 28, 2008 designated "Daffodil Days"; and
WHEREAS, in 2007 the American Cancer Society's Greater Pittsburgh Unit was once again NUMBER ONE IN THE NATION by raising nearly $375,000.00, all of which benefits the Society's programs of cancer research, education and patient services; and
WHEREAS, Daffodil Days chairperson is Amy Kaminski, and WTAE-TV's Sally Wiggin is serving as honorary chairwoman for the twenty-first year; they, along with over 1,000 residents volunteer to help sell and distribute the flowers; and;
WHEREAS, in 2008 GlaxoSmithKlien is serving as a presenting sponsor and the American Cancer Society Daffodil Days campaign is grateful to them and company President George Quesnelle for their tireless support; and
WHEREAS, 2008 marks the 21st Anniversary for WTAE's Sally Wiggin as Chairwoman of the American Cancer Society's annual Daffodil Days campaign, during which time, the campaign has raised $4,018,655 in the City of Pittsburgh; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh, congratulates the American Cancer Society's Greater Pittsburgh Unit on again being named NUMBER ONE IN THE NATION for the year 2007 Daffodil Days campaign, and wishes it even greater success with the 2008 campaign;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that March 24 to 28, 2008 is declared "DAFFODIL DAYS" in the City of Pittsburgh
