WHEREAS in 2001, the General Assembly of the United Nations unanimously adopted resolution 55/82, thereby declaring September 21st of each year as an International Day of Peace; and
WHEREAS consequent to the intent of this resolution, all people, institutions, and organizations world-wide are invited to celebrate a day of peace and non-violence by creating their own unique demonstrations of prayer, along with a variety of other spiritual and secular observances; and
WHEREAS it is the hope of the United Nations and all participants involved in the International Day of Peace that such aforementioned activities will ultimately work to support a global ceasefire to occur annually on September 21st; and
WHEREAS the spiritual observation of the International Day of Peace, the International Day of Peace Vigil, was established and globally promoted by a Pittsburgh native; and
WHEREAS Mr. Stan Willott and Mr. Al Snyder, two Pittsburgh residents, have written, arranged, and recorded "One Day of Peace," a song specifically composed for the International Day of Peace Vigil; and
WHEREAS locally, the International Day of Peace will be commemorated and celebrated by a number of activities including but not limited to a Peace Vigil, Peace Poem and Peace Flag contests in the Pittsburgh Public Schools, special programming on PCTV21, awareness events hosted by the Community College of Beaver County, the Sisters of St. Joseph, the Western PA Resource Group, the Freedom Area School District, the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, Gentiva Home Health Care, the Pittsburgh Diocese, St. Paul's Methodist Church in Allison Park, Mach New Media, the Thomas Merton Center, and the Islamic Center; and
WHEREAS Mr. Bo Mesing, Mr. George D'Angelo, and Mr. Jack Gannon have combined their efforts in order to become a driving force in the commemoration of the International Day of Peace within the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny county, and other surrounding counties, using their ...
