Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh commends and thanks Dr. John Fung for his longtime service to the medical community and the City of Pittsburgh; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh declares Monday, August 9, 2004 "Dr. John J. Fung Day" in the City of Pittsburgh. WHEREAS, Dr. John Fung, Chief of Transplantation Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, is a pioneer in the field of transplantation who has performed over 500 liver transplants and 200 kidney transplants; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Fung has served the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine faculty admirably since coming to Pittsburgh in 1988 following receiving his MD and PhD from the University of Chicago and completing a residency at the University of Rochester; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Fung has been a longtime champion for fair organ allocation practices serving on two statewide task forces to review transplant policies, as well as being a member of the Liver/Intestine and Scientific Advisory committees of the Untied States Network for Organ Sharing; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Fung has served the medical community and the Pittsburgh community as a member of the Medical Advisory Committee of the Western Pennsylvania Chapter of the National Kidney Foundation, the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Transplant Recipient International Organization, the Pittsburgh Celebrity Hockey Team, and as a board member of Family House; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Fung continues be a worldwide leader in xenotransplantation, the transplantation of organs between different species, performing the first ever baboon-to-human liver transplantation; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Fung has been the recipient of numerous awards recognizing his exceptional leadership in his field, including the Special Award for Leadership in Liver Transplantation from the American Liver Foundation, the Transplantation Society Award for Outstanding Clinical Presentation, and the Gift of Life Award from the National Kidney Foundation.
