Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh, does hereby recognize and commend the WEMCO Club for being viable, working constituents, ensuring an enhanced quality of life for individuals. WHEREAS, in 1926, Dr. Carter G. Woodson launched Negro History Week, during the second week of February, as an initiative to bring national attention to the contributions of black people throughout American history. Today, we celebrate the month of February as “Black History Month,” educating our community and youth of the significant accomplishments and barriers of our African American leaders.  This is an opportunity to acknowledge and examine the leadership, perseverance, and dedication of these leaders;

 

WHEREAS, the Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Company (WEMCO Club), founded by Cyrus Green, in 1919, was established to offer people a place where they could go to and bond with others dealing with and working out the stress and strains of personal and work life. 

 

WHEREAS, The WEMCO Club promotes unity throughout the group and the community through social events and yearly events.  The main orientation of the club is to up hold Mr. Cyrus Greens' initial value of promoting camaraderie and general welfare “To those whose path we cross;”

 

WHEREAS, under the current leadership of Mr. Robert Pressley, the WEMCO Club is a group of dedicated, hard working community advocate within the City of Pittsburgh.  They continue to devote themselves to the ongoing needs of our community.
