Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend The Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf for 140 years of extraordinary commitment to the Deaf and hard of hearing, growing the WPSD from a small school serving nine pupils at its inception in 1869 to a thriving community asset and congratulates them on their 140th Anniversary; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Saturday, September 26, 2009, to be “THE WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF DAY” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, The Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf is a non-profit school with high academic expectations, providing quality educational services and a complete extracurricular program to Deaf and hard of hearing children from birth through Grade 12; and,
WHEREAS, The Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf serves over 250 students from more than 100 school districts and 30 counties and is the largest comprehensive center for deaf education in Pennsylvania; and,
WHEREAS, The Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf has a rich history and a culture of Core Beliefs , a Mission and a Vision in which their students shall achieve at the same levels as other children in our society, reach their highest potential in academics and citizenship and achieve independence, positive self-esteem, high personal aspirations and pride ; and,
WHEREAS, The Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf has been a dedicated partner to the communities of Wilkinsburg, Swissvale and Edgewood by being one of the members of the Commitment to the Community Committee which consists of a group of leaders from the municipal, non-profit and business sectors of these communities to strengthen relationships and dialogues on the challenges and opportunities facing them; and,
WHEREAS, The Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf will celebrate their 140th Anniversary and their 125th year on the Edgewood Campus with a weekend celebration consisting of soccer and volleyball games, a Homecoming Dance for Students, a performance by CJ Jones, Campus Tours, Recognition of Deaf All Americans and former Kings and Queens, the Dedication of Craig Way in honor of William Craig and a Celebration Dinner at the Edgewood Country Club.
