Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend Father Jackson for his life dedicated to his country and to his faith; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Saturday, May 12, 2018, to be "Father Jared Jackson Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, father Jared Jackson spent his first five years in Honolulu on Judd Street with his maternal grandparents. He was fifth generation of medical missionaries to the islands. At age six he rejoined his parents and soon they relocated to Cambridge, MA where his father was appointed Professor and Librarian of Houghton Rare Book Library at Harvard. After graduation from Groton in 1948, Jared was a classics major at Harvard College. Soon after graduation in 1952, he joined the Marine Corps and served as first lieutenant during the Korean War; and,

WHEREAS, obeying a call from God, Jared resigned from the Marines to attend seminary at Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge. Having mastered Greek at Groton and Harvard, he was told to begin Hebrew studies. Jared soon realized how different the Hebrew text is from translations. He had found his life's calling. Graduating with an M.Div. in 1958 he was ordained an Episcopal priest; and,

WHEREAS, Jared's first teaching position was at Huron College in London, Ontario. Next, he spent one year teaching at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts. While attending Society of Biblical Literature meetings, he saw Dr. Douglas R.A. Hare whom he knew from Union. Dr. Hare told him of openings in Old Testament at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and Jared was offered a position in 1965; and,

WHEREAS, after retirement in 1997, Jared welcomed the opportunity to mentor students from MUI in Hebrew Bible. With a deep commitment to racial and social justice, Jared volunteered with Pennsylvania Interfaith Impact Network. As a member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Cross in Homewood, Jared leads a "Bible Conversation" on Saturdays at noon. He invites people to hear and share what God is saying to us here and now. Words written two thousand years ago still speak to us today; and,
