Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend this team for their hard work and dedication to excellence both on and off of the court; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, February 28th, 2017 to be "Obama Girls Basketball Team Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Obama Middle School girl's basketball team ended their 2016-2017 season undefeated, 11-0, and in addition represented Pittsburgh Public Schools in many tournaments outside of the city; and

 

WHEREAS, in addition to the regular season, the team participated in the Fox Chapel Tournament, the St. Killian's Tournament in Cranberry Township, and the Chartiers Valley Invitational Basketball Tournament, where they advanced to became champions of the tournament; and

 

WHEREAS, many  of the team's members excel in other athletics outside of basketball, and their commitment to excellence shows in the many honors they have been given, including Female Athlete of the Year, USA Track and Field Youth Nationals finalist, MVP for the Nike Basketball Camp, and Queen of the Court  Award for the Jakim Donaldson Basketball Camp; and

 

WHEREAS, besides possessing stellar athletic talent, the team is made up of some of the best, brightest, and dedicated students in Pittsburgh Public Schools; and

 

WHEREAS, among the team members, many are on the High Honor Roll and enrolled in the Pittsburgh Public Schools Gifted Program; and

 

WHEREAS, in addition to athletic and scholastic commitments, many of these young women give their time and volunteer in their community, including volunteering as peer mentors, youth volunteers for the Women's Walk of Peace, and serving meals to homeless individuals; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend this team for their hard work and dedication to excellence both on and off of the court; and
