WHEREAS, November 11, 1919, commemorated the first anniversary of the end of World War I and became known as “Armistice Day;” and,
WHEREAS, on June 4, 1926, the United States Congress officially recognized the end of World War I when it passed a concurrent resolution stating “it is fitting that the recurring anniversary of this date should be commemorated with thanksgiving and prayer and exercises designed to perpetuate peace through good will and mutual understanding between nations” and to call upon “the officials to display the flag of the United States on all Government buildings on November 11 and inviting the people of the United States to observe the day in schools and churches, or other suitable places, with appropriate ceremonies of friendly relations with all other peoples;” and,
WHEREAS, in 1938 it became a national holiday and on June 1, 1954, the holiday became known as Veterans Day to honor all U.S. Veterans who have served in any capacity; and,
WHEREAS, the City of Pittsburgh commemorates the holiday with its annual Veterans Day Parade held on November 11to celebrate our rich military history and heritage and the service of all United States Military Veterans; and,
WHEREAS, the City of Pittsburgh also thanks Veterans and active military men and women who have served our country through special events, programs and ceremonies; and,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and honor all Veterans for their bravery and courage and encourages all residents of our City to Join us at the 98th Annual Veterans Day Parade; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare, Saturday, November 11, 2017, to be “Veterans Parade Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
