WHEREAS, on January 24, 2011, working with City Council, the late Gena Palombini Turner organized a meeting at the West End Overlook to discuss residents getting involved in the numerous projects underway in District 2 and the Elliott Community Group was born; and,
WHEREAS, the Elliott Community Group is comprised of motivated volunteers who are committed to promoting growth and development in the West End and Elliott neighborhoods of Pittsburgh enriching the lives of our residents; and,
WHEREAS, the community group embraces the residents of Pittsburgh by hosting its annual July 4th Community Day Extravaganza and Winter Wonderland held at the West End Overlook, and they participate in National Night Out. In addition, the Elliott Community Group supports the Marathon runners in the West End; and,
WHEREAS, the Elliott Community Group was awarded the Love Your Block Grant in the years 2011-2013, which they used to convert a highly visible lot into a Veterans Tribute Garden, create a new community gateway flower bed and sign, in partnership with City Council and Lamar Advertising, and revitalized an empty city lot in Elliott by installing flower boxes and panel fencing; and,
WHEREAS, they utilized the Mayor's Edible Garden partner program to convert an abandoned lot into a useful community resource, organized community cleanup events, and collected donations for Special Olympics; and,
WHEREAS, in December of 2013, the group honored their founder and most active member, Gena Palombini Turner, at their annual Winter Wonderland and shortly thereafter lost her to illness and has been missed ever since; and,
WHEREAS, currently, the Elliott Community Group is working closely with City Council to re-purpose a closed school building, turn a dumpsite into a viable business and revitalize Townsend Park, among other projects; and,
