WHEREAS, On March 25, 2006, Ms. Connie Portis and Renaissance Publications will sponsor the 21st Annual Black Extravaganza and Trailblazer Awards ceremony; and
WHEREAS, The theme for this year's program will be, "A Gala Intermission," with Mrs. Cecile M. Springer and Mr. Charles M. Powell acting as the honorary Chairpersons for the event; and
WHEREAS, Since 1986 Renaissance Publications has recognized African Americans who have worked tirelessly within their chosen professions, thereby opening doors for younger generations to follow; and
WHEREAS, This year's 2006 Black Trailblazers are recognized for their exemplary contributions within their respective fields and the positive impact they have made within our community by enabling others to continue to achieve. The honorees for 2006 are Rev. Ricky Van Burgess, Religion; Oliver W. Byrd, Leadership; Attorney Carl G. Cooper, Law; Angela F. Ford, Ph.D., Public Health Education; Peggy B. Harris, Human Services; Rev. Marcus W. Harvey, Human Services; LaMont Jones, Jr., Media; Sharon L. McDaniel, Ph.D., Community Empowerment; Sala Udin, Political Service; and Elise Roby Yanders, Business; and
WHEREAS, This year the Cecile M. Springer Womanpower Award will be presented to Velma Monteiro-Tribble; and
WHEREAS, The recipients of the KDKA-TV Lift Up Awards for this year are Phyllis Comer, Duquesne Light-sponsor; Beverly Haines, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center-sponsor; Timothy Hampton, National City Bank-sponsor; Lionel Hong-Long, clients of Clinique on Fifth-sponsor; Carolyn Howard, Oxford Development Company-sponsor; Cecelia Jenkins, Bynums Marketing & Communications Inc.-sponsor; and Stanford White, Citizens Bank-sponsor; and
