WHEREAS, Earth Day began on April 22, 1970 by demonstrators around the world marching for environmental awareness and a new world view emerging through the eyes of our older and younger generations to see our planet as a home to all; and
WHEREAS, Ecolution: An Earth Day Celebration, will be Pittsburgh's first green Earth Day event held on Saturday, April 19, 2008 at the Mattress Factory; and
WHEREAS, Ecolution will feature organic food and drinks, an eco-fashion show, performances, and an auction to benefit the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy; and
WHEREAS, Ecolution will use a local company to green the event so that all waste will be recycled and composted; and
WHEREAS, the Mattress Factory is the second museum in the country to offer a green, paperless membership level which will save approximately 12 trees per year and has implemented a recycling program in its administrative offices that operates with 100% participation.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh thanks the Mattress Factory for its green programs and commends Ecolution for its efforts to raise environmental awareness on Earth Day; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby declares Saturday, April 19, 2008 "Earth Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
