WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Voyager is a non-profit science and environmental educational organization dedicated to providing river-based experiential learning and adventure opportunities for students, teachers, and the public on the rivers of western Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Voyager's programs are primarily conducted on two 80-foot, 70-ton retired U.S. Navy vessels and a 44-foot houseboat docked next to the Carnegie Science Center submarine; and
WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Voyager's benefit this week will feature the world renowned ocean explorer Jean-Michel Cousteau, who has devoted his life to marine education, research, and the development of a conservation ethic for protecting the world's oceans; and
WHEREAS, the benefit, which will take place on Thursday, April 27th, 2006 at the Omni William Penn Hotel with event co-chairs R. Bruce Bickel and Jim Roddey, will also celebrate the development of the Green Boat project, the Pittsburgh Voyager's construction of a green passenger boat which will serve as its flagship vessel for river-based science education; and
WHEREAS, the green boat will serve as an example of an environmentally friendly vessel though its minimal impact on the natural environment and green building design and procedures; and

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh, in honor of this endeavor, does hereby declare April 25, 2006, to be the "Pittsburgh Voyager" Day in the City of Pittsburgh.
