WHEREAS, Great Outdoors Week showcases the diversity of outdoor activities available in the Pittsburgh region; and
WHEREAS, outdoor amenities create a more vibrant Pittsburgh and a more attractive Southwestern Pennsylvania region; and
WHEREAS, increasing participation in outdoor recreational activities creates a sense of community among participants and a better understanding of and a deeper appreciation for the environment and wilderness among the residents of and visitors to Western Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, outdoor recreational activities support the attraction and retention of talented individuals in the region by providing recreational pursuits that encourage them to see this region as a place to call home; and
WHEREAS, more than twenty groups are sponsoring over one hundred different activities during Great Outdoors Week, including:
Bike to Work Week, May 13-21, 2004
Pedal Pittsburgh, May 16, 2004
Venture Outdoors Festival, May 22, 2004

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, the Council of the City of Pittsburgh applauds the efforts of Great Outdoors Week organizers and participants, and declares May 13 to May 23, 2004 "Great Outdoors Week" in the City of Pittsburgh.
