WHEREAS, on October 7, 2004 The DePaul Institute is holding its "Reach for the Stars Gala" at the Westin Convention Center Hotel; and
WHEREAS, Heather Whitestone McCallum will be the key note speaker; and
WHEREAS, Heather is profoundly deaf, like many of the students attending The DePaul Institute; and
WHEREAS, Heather was selected "Miss America" for 1995, the first woman with a disability to be crowned Miss America in the Pageant's 75 year history; and
WHEREAS, The DePaul Institute is the only school in Western Pennsylvania teaching deaf or hearing impaired children strong spoken language skills ; and;
WHEREAS, rather than relying on sign language, students are taught to maximize the use of their residual hearing and to read speech on the lips of others so that they may become fully participating citizens in the hearing and speaking world;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh congratulates The DePaul Institute for the tremendous assistance provided to deaf or hearing impaired children and wishes The DePaul Institute a successful "Reach for the Stars Gala" ;and
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh declares Thursday, October 7, 2004 to be Heather Whitestone McCallum Day in the City of Pittsburgh.
