WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Public Schools developed the Empowering Effective Teachers plan to empower, elevate, evaluate and recognize teachers and teaching, and through this work, the District can now highlight teachers' strengths and stories, and continue to build a culture that supports high performance; and,
WHEREAS, this initiative is supported by a Teacher Recognition and Empowerment Advisory Committee that consists of approximately 80 teachers. The District has approached this work as an integral piece of the teacher growth and evaluation system, within the context of comprehensive efforts to focus on people, culture, and structures within the Whole Child, Whole Community plan; and,
WHEREAS, the Empowering Effective Teachers plan consists of three main parts: recognition and appreciation, teacher-led professional learning, and community engagement to elevate teachers and the teaching profession. As part of their recognition and appreciation efforts, Pittsburgh Public Schools has established Teachers Matter Week, which will take place from November 3-8; and,
WHEREAS, throughout the week, schools will be visited by Pittsburgh leaders, local businesses will show their appreciation for teachers through specials and discounts, and to cap off the week, the Carnegie Science Center will open its doors on Saturday, November 8, for a very special celebration; and,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and honor all of our teachers in the Pittsburgh Public Schools system for choosing such an honorable profession, and for their dedicated efforts to improve the lives of our City's youth; and,

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare November 3-8, 2014, to be "Teachers Matter Week" in the City of Pittsburgh.
