Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend The Aleph Institute, Northeast Region, for its focused and devoted mission to provide guidance, direction and visitation to the incarcerated Jewish population and to provide programs and services that attain maximum impact within society and notes the opening of The Aleph Institute Hyman and Martha Rogal Center in Squirrel Hill; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Thursday, May 22, 2008 to be “ALEPH INSTITUTE DAY” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, The Aleph Institute is a not for profit, Jewish religious, educational, humanitarian organization offering a multitude of services to Jewish men and women who are confined and for their families, focusing on the premise that “No Jew is forgotten” and “No Jew is alone”; and,

WHEREAS, The Aleph Institute was established in 1981 in Miami, FL, to locate Jewish inmates, a segment of the Jewish population which had suffered from severe neglect, and supply them with regular Rabbi visits, Shabbat services, books and Torah studies; and,

WHEREAS, in 1991, Rabbi Moishe Mayir Vogel opened the Northeast Regional Office of the Aleph Institute and has struggled against challenging odds to reach Jewish inmates who are scattered throughout the prison system, state hospitals and group homes; and,

WHEREAS, Rabbi Vogel, his devoted staff and dedicated volunteers have built The Aleph Institute into one of the nation's most trusted and effective advocates for Jewish prisoners and their loved ones, gaining the endorsement of a skeptical prison system, thereby according the organization a unique level of confidence and responsibility; and,

WHEREAS, groundbreaking for the Northeast Regional Office of The Aleph Institute took place in November 2006, and now the Grand Opening of the Hyman and Martha Rogal Center of The Aleph Institute will be held on May 22, 2008.
