Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend "Serbian National Federation (SNF)" in celebrating their 125th Anniversary; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Saturday July, 18, 2026 to be "Serbian National Federation Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, founded in 1901 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the Serbian National Federation (SNF) stands as one of the oldest and most influential Serbian American fraternal organizations in the United States. Emerging during a period of heavy immigration from the Balkans, the SNF provided Serbian newcomers with a sense of stability, cultural continuity, and mutual support. Its mission-preserving Serbian heritage while empowering Serbian Americans-has guided its work for more than a century; and,

WHEREAS, a cornerstone of the SNF's identity is its newspaper, Srbobran, first published in 1906. Created as a unifying voice for Serbian immigrants, Srbobran offered news from the homeland, updates on Serbian communities across America, and commentary on cultural and political issues relevant to the diaspora. Over time, it evolved into one of the longest running Serbian language publications in North America, serving as both a historical record and a cultural lifeline for generations; and,

WHEREAS, education has always been central to the SNF's mission. Through its scholarship program started in 1989, it has awarded over $150,000 annually to Serbian American students pursuing higher education. These annual scholarships ease financial burdens and reinforce the SNF's commitment to developing future leaders who remain connected to their heritage; and,

WHEREAS, community involvement remains one of the SNF's most visible strengths. The Federation sponsors cultural festivals, church events, youth programs, and humanitarian initiatives that support both Serbian Americans and communities in Serbia. Its outreach fosters unity, preserves traditions, and strengthens intergenerational ties; and,

WHEREAS, sports have long played a vibrant role in SNF life. The organization hosts an annual basketball tournament which is the oldest at 86 years and going, as well as, golf, and bowling tournaments that bring together members from across the country. These events promote camaraderie...
