WHEREAS, Mrs. Lillian G. Allen is an ambitious, vibrant woman and a pillar of excellence in her community here in the city of Pittsburgh; and,
WHEREAS, born in Auburn, Alabama on April 23, 1908 and the sole survivor of 8 siblings, Mrs. Allen first migrated to Pittsburgh when she was five years old and after moving back to Alabama for a short period of time she returned to Pittsburgh at the age of 14; and,
WHEREAS, after receiving her first jobs as a waitress and then as a maid at Kaufmann's, Mrs. Allen decided to fill the void of a good Negro beautician by becoming a cosmetologist, graduating from LaSalle Beauty school in 1929 and later receiving a certificate in cosmetology from the University of Pittsburgh; and,
WHEREAS, in 1944, Mrs. Allen opened her own salon called "Your House of Beauty" and it became the premiere Negro owned beauty salon in the heyday of the Hill District; and,
WHEREAS, an energetic and proud woman, Mrs. Allen has traveled the world and during her lifetime has even been a Pittsburgh media darling, being seen on WQED and mentioned in numerous articles over the years; and,
WHEREAS, as an entrepreneur, world-class beautician, and author, Mrs. Allen attributes her longevity to clean living, hard work, a good sense of humor, and looking forward to life's next adventure;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare April 30, 2013 to be "Mrs. Lillian G. Allen Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
