WHEREAS, honey bees pollinate over 1/3 of the food that we eat; and
WHEREAS, honey bees make just 1/12 of a teaspoon of honey in their six week lifespan; and
WHEREAS, the color and flavor of honey differs greatly, depending on the source of the nectar; and
WHEREAS, there are more than 300 unique varieties of honey in the United States; and
WHEREAS, honey is used as a sweetener, an ingredient in beauty treatments, medical and nutritional supplements, and energy boosters; and
WHEREAS, Americans consume approximately 1.3 pounds of honey per year; and
WHEREAS, Burgh Bees was created in 2008 to promote and support urban beekeeping and local honey production; and
WHEREAS, Burgh Bees now has over 200 dues paying members and has trained nearly 250 new beekeepers in the tri-state area; and
WHEREAS, the importance of honey was officially recognized by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 1989, when they declared September to be National Honey Month;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that Pittsburgh City Council joins Burgh Bees in celebrating National Honey Month; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Pittsburgh City Council declares Tuesday September 20th to be Burgh Bees Day in the City of Pittsburgh.
