WHEREAS, the Shadyside Presbyterian Church was founded in 1866 in a beautiful building along Westminster Place and Amberson Avenue in Pittsburgh’s Shadyside neighborhood; and,
WHEREAS, some of the Church’s earliest congregants were members of families whose namesakes still grace the Pittsburgh region, including Aiken, Negley, Westinghouse and Heinz; and,
WHEREAS, in 1869, then-pastor William Trimble Beatty helped to establish Pittsburgh’s first college for women, now known as Chatham University; and,
WHEREAS, the Shadyside Presbyterian Church hosted the world’s first weekly religious program on KDKA radio, broadcasted to explorers in the North and South Poles, and Church leadership and missionaries were instrumental in developing the Shadyside Presbyterian Hospital in China’s Shandong Province; and,
WHEREAS, the Church has displayed a tradition of excellence in education with active campus ministries at Carnegie Mellon University and the Chatham University and an on-site nursery school, which has had a well-regarded 64-year history; and,
WHEREAS, 150 years after its founding, the Shadyside Presbyterian Church is still housed in its original location, which is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places in honor of its Richardsonian Romanesque architecture and continues its legacy of service both in Pittsburgh and across the globe through partnerships with schools and nonprofit organizations; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize the groundbreaking and philanthropic history of the Shadyside Presbyterian Church and does hereby celebrate the church’s 150th anniversary; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare October 2, 2016 to be “Shadyside Presbyterian Church 150th Anniversary Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
