WHEREAS, Samuel Staten, Sr., worked ten years as a construction laborer before becoming a Local 332 Field Representative in 1970; and
WHEREAS, in 1973 Mr. Staten was appointed Assistant Business Manager, and in August 1978 he was elected Business Manager; and
WHEREAS, in 1987 Mr. Staten was honored by the Friends of Labor Committee, and was presented with a $25,000 check which he turned into charitable contributions to four different charities, and thus began the annual Friends of Labor Charity Dinner by which Local 332 members have donated over a million dollars to local organizations that provide services to the needy; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Staten also serves as a Trustee of Laborers' District Council Building & Construction Health & Welfare Fund, Delegate to the Philadelphia Building & Construction Trades Council, Board member of the Philadelphia Housing Authority, member of the African American Chamber of Commerce, and many other positions; and
WHEREAS, on February 17, 2011, at the Third Annual Mid-Atlantic Community Fund Dinner, Mr. Staten was honored for Lifetime Achievement;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend and congratulate Samuel Staten, Sr., on being awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Mid-Atlantic Community Fund, and does hereby declare February 22, 2011, to be "Samuel Staten, Sr., Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
