WHEREAS, the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation will host their 4th Annual One Step Closer to a Cure Pittsburgh 5K Run/Walk this Saturday, June 3, 2006 at the North Park Boat House; and
WHEREAS, the mission of the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation is "to promote research and education for the diagnosis, treatment and cure of mitochondrial disorders and to provide support to affected individuals and families," and
WHEREAS, mitochondrial disease can affect the heart, muscles, lungs and brain, and one in 4,000 children born this year will show symptoms of a mitochondrial disease by age 5;
WHEREAS, UMDF was founded in 1995 by parents who had lost loved ones to a mitochondrial disease and through their efforts over the last 10 years, the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation "has redefined hope for families affected by mitochondrial diseases," and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh congratulates UMDF on all of their fundraising efforts and commends them for their resolve to "fund a cure."
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh recognizes Saturday, June 3, 2006 as "One Step Closer to a Cure Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
