Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh commends the Squirrel Hill Urban Coalition for its efforts to improve quality of life in the neighborhood and congratulates the 2009 Citizens of the Year honorees.

WHEREAS, the Squirrel Hill Urban Coalition will celebrate its 16th Annual Citizens of the Year Award with a dinner held on October 21, 2009; and
 
WHEREAS, the Coalition is a non-profit community group founded in 1972 to enhance the physical and social attributes of the community; and
 
WHEREAS, the Coalition's volunteer committees work to provide leadership for the community through studying, debating and advocating positions on issues affecting the neighborhood; and
 
WHEREAS, the Coalition has set up and maintains many committees including Urban Forest, Commercial Development, Residential Quality and Education, as well as programs such as the Litter Patrol, Block Watch and the Citizens' Patrol; and
 
WHEREAS, the Coalition recently took over the publication of the Squirrel Hill Magazine, which keeps residents informed about events, programs, businesses and organizations; and
 
WHEREAS, the Coalition will honor the following citizens of the 14th Ward who have made a significant contribution to furthering the mission of the Coalition:
 
·      Steven G. Hawkins, Past President of SHUC and Owner & Principal of Steven G. Hawkins Architects'
 
·      Jeffrey Waldo, Manager of Operations for Squirrel Hill Giant Eagle
 
·      Jewish Residential Services, which helps People with Psychiatric or Development Disabilities.
