Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does commend and congratulate the NAACP on 100 years of service, and does hereby proclaim Sunday, October 18, 2009, to be “NAACP Freedom Sunday” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Freedom Sunday is an annual event headed up by the Religious Affairs Committee of the NAACP in order to celebrate the integral relationship between the NAACP and the religious community, to give moral and ethical interpretation to civil rights initiatives, and to enlist the support or religious groups of all denominations; and
 
WHEREAS, this year specially commemorating the 100th anniversary of the NAACP, the 7th annual Freedom Sunday Worship Service will take place at the Bethel AME Church on Sunday, October 18, 2009; and
 
WHEREAS, the theme of this year's Freedom Sunday Service is "NAACP 100 years - Bold Dreams, Big Victories," marking the significance and importance of this special centennial celebration; and
 
WHEREAS, the largest and oldest civil rights organization in the United States, the National Association of the Advancement of Colored People was founded on February 12, 1909, to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination; and
 
WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Chapter of the NAACP was organized in 1915 in the home of Attorney William H. Randolph, who was chosen as the first President of the local NAACP chapter;
WHEREAS, currently presiding over the Pittsburgh Chapter of the NAACP is M. Gayle Moss, who plays a vital role in the community as well as in the NAACP;
