WHEREAS, on May 10, 2011, the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh will hold the city's largest celebration honoring the State of Israel , known as Yom Ha'atzmaut , the 63rd anniversary of Israel's independence; and,
WHEREAS, on May 14, 1948, the Jewish People's Council gathered at the Tel Aviv Museum and approved a proclamation declaring the establishment of the State of Israel and since then Israeli Independence Day is celebrated in Israel by a speech from the Speaker of the Knesset, a ritual march of soldiers carrying the flag of Israel and the lighting of twelve torches ; and,
WHEREAS, in Pittsburgh, Yom Ha'atzmaut will be marked with the community's largest annual Israel festival, with crafts from local Jewish vendors, live music by local performers, food from the community's kosher caterers, a petting zoo, interactive experiences and performances from the Spirit of Israel Teen Delegation ; and,
WHEREAS, the Spirit of Israel Teen Delegation is a group of 10 young people, grades 10-12, from Pittsburgh's Partnership 2000 region and Pittsburgh Sister City of Karmiel-Misgav who travel to Pittsburgh every year to participate in community wide Israel events that include Yom Ha'atzmaut and Yom Hazikaron, the Israel Memorial Day ; and,
WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Partnership 2000 develops youth leadership, builds community and strengthens the region and the connection to Israel and Karmiel-Misgav through people to people connections and relationship building.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize Yom Ha'atzmaut, the State of Israel's 63rd Anniversary of Independence ; and,

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare May 10, 2011, to be "YOM HA'ATZMAUT 2011" in the City of Pittsburgh.
