Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh honors Dr. Barbour for 80 years and counting of a life lived to its fullest. We honor his achievements and know that his legacy continues in the children whose lives he has transformed. We admire his dedication to Pittsburgh Schools and value the accomplishments of Dr. Ken Barbour. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare the week of September 16th, 2017, until September 23rd, 2016 to be Dr. Ken Barbour week in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Dr. Ken Barbour was born September 16, 1937, in Oakdale, Pennsylvania to George and Evon Barbour. On Saturday, September 16, 2017, Dr. Barbour will celebrate his 80th birthday. Dr. Barbour has touched many lives with his integrity, hard work, and dedication to the people of Pittsburgh; and,

WHEREAS, Dr. Barbour grew up with his seven brothers and six sisters. Dr. Barbour grew up in a Christian home, and his parents had high moral, spiritual, and academic values. They instilled in him and his siblings a commitment to studying hard and making good grades; and,

WHEREAS, Dr. Barbour served Pittsburgh Schools from 1966 to 1996. During those 30 years, Dr. Barbour served children, parents, and the greater Pittsburgh area schools in many capacities. He began as an elementary teacher, and the Board of Education selected him to open one of the first Open Space Schools. He also served as principal at Manchester Elementary School, where he racially balanced the student population and a maintained a high level of academic achievement. Later, Dr. Barbour was the first choice to become principal of West Side Traditional Academy, formerly Fairywood Elementary School, when the School Board decided to reopen it after being closed for 10 years due to concerns about drugs and violence in nearby housing developments. Dr. Barbour brought the uniform code to district schools, implemented a strict discipline code, and added character education to the elementary curriculum; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Barbour completed many special assignments throughout his career. Dr. Barbour trained and mentored future Pittsburgh Public School teachers, collaborated with others to provide summer workshop opportunities for principals and administrative staff, and supervised and evaluated principals at eight Pittsburgh Schools. Among other accomplishments, Dr. Barbour was awarded a grant to open Fairywood Health Center-staffed by volunteer doctors, nurses, and medical support staff-on the campus of...
