WHEREAS, Mr. William Cary Allen was an outstanding educator, community servant and beloved figure whose work deeply impacted Pittsburgh’s East End - particularly the students, families and school communities of District 9. His service earned him recognition as a “Community Champion” by Homewood Children’s Village and a “School Garden Hero” by Grow Pittsburgh. He was also a proud member of the Iota Phi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Allen was born on August 25, 1968, in Pittsburgh, PA and passed away on July 19, 2025. Mr. Allen attended St. Bede Elementary School and graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1986, before continuing his education at Hampton University. Following his graduation from Hampton, he attended the University of Pittsburgh School of Education, where he earned his Elementary Education Teaching Certification and a master’s equivalency in education. His professional career began as a teacher at Belmar Elementary School and later served as an administrator at Lemington Elementary School. He taught at Faison Elementary School in Homewood, including working with Tier 3 behavioral-support students in the Academy, before continuing his service at Lincoln Elementary School. He remained at Lincoln until his retirement in 2024; and
WHEREAS, affectionately known as “Cary” by his family and friends, he was a devoted husband to his wife and fellow educator, Doreen Allen and a loving father to his sons CJ and Donovan, and his daughter Ari. His family was central to his life and he spoke about them often. To know Mr. Allen, was to know how deeply he loved and valued his family; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Allen dedicated 33 years of his life to educating children in Pittsburgh’s East End. His legacy cannot be measured by the number of years he served, but by the countless lives he touched.
