Title: BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Wednesday, May 30, 2012, to be “Memorial Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, first named Decoration Day, Memorial Day is a day of remembrance to those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country,  which was first widely observed on May 30, 1868 by proclamation of General John A. Logan of the Grand Army Republic to commemorate the sacrifices of the Civil War soldiers; and,
 
WHEREAS, during the first national celebration, General James Garfield spoke at the Arlington National Cemetery, after which 5,000 participants placed flowers on graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery; and after World War I, Memorial Day became an occasion for honoring those who died in all America's wars; and,
 
WHEREAS, the American Legion Langley Post 496 honors those who paid the ultimate sacrifice to our country by placing 800 flags at the Hollywood Cemetery. On Memorial Day they visit 5 memorials in the west starting at Hollywood Cemetery in Sheraden where they have prayer, a 21 gun salute, taps is played, wreathes are placed at  the memorials and this year  the U.S. Air Force will complete a fly overhead; and,
 
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend the American Legion Langley Post 496 for remembering those who died in service to our country and honors and remembers our ancestors, our family members, our loved ones, our neighbors, and our friends who have given the ultimate sacrifice; and,
