Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare May 19, 2011 to be "National Americorps Day" in the City of Pittsburgh, and commends the Pittsburgh Health Corps for their work in promoting healthy behavior and access to health services within our communities.

WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Health Corps is a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service and National Health Corps, and has been administered by the Allegheny County Health Department since its inception in 1994; and,
WHEREAS, the mission of Pittsburgh Health Corps is to increase healthy behavior and access to health services by enhancing the capacity of community and faith-based organizations in Allegheny County, providing education about healthy life choices, and assisting communities to be better prepared for emergencies while fostering members' pursuit of health-related careers, civic involvement and a life-long commitment to service; and,
WHEREAS, since 1994, Pittsburgh Health Corps has placed over 390 members in over 50 organizations across Allegheny County that include various non-profits, FQHC's, government entities, schools and foundations; and,
WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Health Corps members have contributed over 469,335 hours of service to Allegheny County and City of Pittsburgh residents and communities in the last 17 years; and,
WHEREAS, the 2011 National AmeriCorps Week was celebrated May 14 to May 21, with Pittsburgh Health Corps members celebrating the week participating in various service projects; and,
WHEREAS, on May 14th the Healthy Start House sponsored Community Day Event for families and children took place from 3pm-7pm; on May 15th members ran and supported over 3 different nonprofits in Pittsburgh for the Pittsburgh Marathon, distributed water to participants and distributed literature; and on May 18th Habitat for Humanity ReStore members helped build and paint shelving and displays, hang up signs, organize, clean and price donations that included doors, windows, refrigerators, tubs, toilets, sinks, couches, cabinets, hardware, plumbing and more;
