WHEREAS, Lieutenant Robert L. Mungin, Sr., a native of Jacksonville, FL, has made his home in Pittsburgh, PA with his wife Gloria of 57 years, with whom he shares 4 children and 13 grandchildren; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Mungin led a distinguished career in the US Army from 1945 to 1949, initially drafted to serve in World War II and continuing to play a military role in Okinawa, Japan and at Fort Lee in Petersburg, VA, concluding with the receipt of an honorable discharge as Lieutenant; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Mungin put to great benefit the GI Bill by attending the Tuskegee Institute (Tuskegee University) where he earned his BS in Industrial Education and where he would receive the honor in 1986 of being inducted into the Tuskegee University Hall of Fame, after having furthered his education at Duquesne University with the receipt of a Masters Degree in Counseling Education, and at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public and International Affairs with the completion of the doctoral program; and,
WHEREAS, in 1964, Mr. Mungin was the first African American bus driver hired by the Greyhound Bus Station in Pittsburgh, at the time joining only 9 other African American drivers in the entire US Eastern Division; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Mungin has spent most of his life in the field of education dedicating 2 years as a teacher/football coach in Sylacauga, Alabama, 11 years as a teacher, coach and counselor at Fifth Avenue High, and his final 18 years as a Principal at Larimer and Belmar Schools in the Pittsburgh Public School District; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Mungin has been a Deacon at Sixth Mt. Zion Baptist Church for 17 years where he has proven himself to be a tireless leader of his community and has used his career in education to help shape the lives of those with whom he has come in contact;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend Lieutenant Robert L. Mungin, Sr. for his service to the nation and his service to the community; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare April 27, 2010 to be "Lt. Robert L. Mungin Sr. Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
