Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and honor Tom Fitzgerald as the 2012 Financial Planning Association of Pittsburgh's First Class Patriot Achievement Award winner, and does hereby declare Tuesday, May 22, 2012, to be “Tom Fitzgerald Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the First Class Patriot Achievement Award from Financial Planning Association of Pittsburgh honors past and/or present community service by veterans of any US military branch, including reservists and National Guard, who reside in Western Pennsylvania; and
 
WHEREAS, a $10,000 donation to the Veterans Leadership Program of Western Pennsylvania will be made by the F.P.A. of Pittsburgh in honor of the top award winner; and
 
WHEREAS, while working full time as a homicide detective, Tom Fitzgerald attended Allegheny County Community College and received an Associates Degree in Criminology, then a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Resource Management from Geneva College in 1993, and finally a Master of Arts degree in Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations in 1996 from St. Francis College; and
 
WHEREAS, in 1996, Tom Fitzgerald was promoted to Superintendent of the Allegheny County Police Department, the fourth largest police department in Pennsylvania, and in July of 2000, became the Chief of Police of the Murrysville Police Department; and
 
WHEREAS, in 2002, Tom Fitzgerald was nominated by the President George W. Bush to become the United States Marshal for the Western District of Pennsylvania and after a lengthy interview process and confirmation process by the U.S. Senate, was appointed as a  U.S. Marshal until his retirement in 2011; and
 
WHEREAS, Tom Fitzgerald devoted much of his attention, through the years, to helping many charitable and veteran related organizations, he is most of all the loving husband of Patricia, father of Angel, Sean and Tom and grandfather of Krystal, Lawton and Julianna - always a great and loving family man; and
 
WHEREAS, the world has been changed by his work, a claim that not many can make, the great leadership by Tom Fitzgerald exemplifies his dedication towards improving the quality of life for all people in Western Pennsylvania; and
 
WHEREAS, on Tuesday, May 22, 2012, during the Saluting Service, at the Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum, the community, will recognize Tom's achievements and celebrate his award as the F.P.A. of Pittsburgh's First Class Patriot Award winner;
