Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh recognizes the honor brought to the City of Pittsburgh by our star players participating in international tournaments on the world's stage, and to express pride in Steve Gregory, John Rethage and all the Team Pittsburgh players, board members and volunteers, does hereby declare Tuesday, June 30, 2009, to be “Steve Gregory and John Rethage Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

BodyWHEREAS, Steven Gregory was born in Pittsburgh on March 8, 1989, and is a graduate of Perry Traditional Academy, a life-long resident of Brighton Heights, now attending Community College of Allegheny County where he is working on the preliminaries for his engineering degree; and

                     WHEREAS, Steve Gregory has been playing dekhockey in Brighton Heights since he was four years old; and

                     WHEREAS, Steve Gregory's father, Don Gregory, along with Mike Smith, eleven years ago began a hockey league in Brighton Heights in District 1, which plays at Marmaduke Park and is run by a board and a number of volunteers as Team Pittsburgh, which serves the City of Pittsburgh as a resource for training, team building, and togetherness for our young people; and

                     WHEREAS, Steve Gregory, his brother Dan Gregory, Mike Nauman, Aaron Hahne, Mitchell Faust, Ryan Saylor, Chris Liebers playing last year on the Team U.S.A. Junior National Team, coached by Mark Madden and Cory Herschk, won the bronze medal in Newfoundland; and

                     WHEREAS, coaches and peers working over the past year invited Steve Gregory (right wing) to play this year on the Team U.S.A. men's team, along with fellow Pittsburgher John Rethage (goalie), four or five young men from Pittsburgh's suburbs and the remaining dozen players from across the country; and

                     WHEREAS, that team that recently played representing the U.S.A. in Prague, Czech Republic (the men's world championships in ball hockey), defeated Greece (4-2), Hong Kong (13-1), Austria (11-1), Switzerland (4-2), and Canada (5-4 in overtime - Steve had the game winner, and thus knocked favored Canada out of the tournament), ultimately losing, though, to India in the semifinals and garnering fourth place;
