Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and honor the important milestone of Pitt Band, and does hereby declare Saturday, April 14, 2012, to be “Pitt Band Centennial Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the University of Pittsburgh Varsity Marching Band, or Pitt Band, the largest and most visible student organization on campus, is one of the greatest traditions that the University of Pittsburgh has to offer; and
WHEREAS, the Pitt Band, founded in 1911, is currently housed in Trees Hall <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trees_Hall>, however the University of Pittsburgh is in the process of building a new marching band facility; and
WHEREAS, the Pitt Band, includes over 200 instrumentalists, a majorette squad known as the Golden Girls, a color guard, and the Pitt Drum-line, also known as "the Crew"; and
WHEREAS, the Pitt Band is dedicated to excellence in marching and musical performance, promoting spirit on and off campus, and providing a compelling experience for all of its members; and
WHEREAS, the University of Pittsburgh does not have a school of music and music majors are not required to be members of the marching band, participants in Pitt Band have been given remarkable opportunities to contribute to the enhancement of Pitt's pride and tradition throughout the region; and
WHEREAS, the band begins playing two hours before kickoff with the Panther Prowl, the entire pregame show consists of "Hail to Pitt <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hail_to_Pitt>", the "University of Pittsburgh Alma Mater <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Pittsburgh_Alma_Mater>", "The Star Spangled Banner <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Star_Spangled_Banner>", the "Victory Song <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pitt_Victory_Song>", and "The Panther Song <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hail_to_Pitt>"; and
WHEREAS, during the latter two songs, the band moves from their block formation and ends in the contemporary block-lettered "PITT" formation; and
WHEREAS, on April 14, 2012, past and present University of Pittsburgh Varsity Marching Band members gathered to celebrate its 100th Anniversary;
