Title: WHEREAS, Kenny Slaughter served the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police for more than two decades, affectionately earning the nickname "Officer Friendly," due to his warm, compassionate, and caring demeanor, his willingness to go the extra mile for anyone who needed a helping hand, and his consistent smile; and,

WHEREAS, Kenny Slaughter served the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police for more than two decades, affectionately earning the nickname “Officer Friendly,” due to his warm, compassionate, and caring demeanor, his willingness to go the extra mile for anyone who needed a helping hand, and his consistent smile; and,

WHEREAS, Kenny served with distinction as a Community Resource Officer and cared deeply about forging strong and meaningful relationships with local organizations, everyday residents, and neighborhood leaders; and,

 

WHEREAS, upon retiring from the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police, Kenny joined the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy in 2006 and began his role as a park ambassador in the newly constructed Schenley Plaza where he managed maintenance, security, and event management and ensured that this public square remained a safe and welcoming place for everyone; and,

 

WHEREAS, over his nearly 20 years of service to the Parks Conservancy, which is nearing its end, Kenny became known as the “Mayor of Schenley Plaza,” forming deep bonds with the college students, faculty, residents, workers, and tourists alike and always aiming to brighten their days; and,

 

WHEREAS, Kenny’s warm personality, charm, and quick wit brought a sense of belonging and community to this beloved and popular park space; and,

 

WHEREAS, thanks to Kenny’s tireless efforts and passion, Schenley Plaza remains a vibrant, safe, and beautiful place where people of diverse background eat, play, laugh, and study together; and,

 

WHEREAS, after over four decades of service to the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police, Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, and the people of our great city, Kenny will begin a well-deserved retirement and looks forward to spending more time with his loving partner Marla and their family.

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend and congratulate Kenny Slaughter for his years of dedicated service to the residents and visitors of Pittsburgh, Oakland, and Schenley Plaza and wishes him well during his upcoming retirement.

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Friday, August 16 to be “Kenny Slaughter Day” in the city of Pittsburgh.
