WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation (The Foundation) actively promotes physical well-being, encourages teamwork, emphasizes the importance of education and provides essential life skills to young people in our community not only through hockey, but many other activities; and,
WHEREAS, during the off-season, the players , coaches, and front office staff of the Penguins organization along with many Pittsburgh Penguins’ fans contribute by volunteering their time to many charitable and community outreach efforts which benefits the youth in our regions; and,
WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation in conjunction with UPMC Sports Medicine created the Heads Up program to help combat an epidemic of concussions in young athletes. PensFIT was launched in 2012 to provide free floor hockey equipment to qualifying elementary schools in Allegheny County. With the help of California University of Pennsylvania, the Foundation designed a street hockey curriculum for use in physical education programs, and during the 2013-14 school year, the Foundation introduced Tablets in Education which puts Kindle tablets in the hands of our children. Finally, from the proceeds of their 50/50 Raffle, the Foundation provides grants to charities who share in their mission; and,
WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark have joined forces on a $2.3 million project called Project Power Play to build 12 dek hockey rinks in the Pittsburgh area and have completed Pittsburgh rinks in Banksville Park, Lewis Park, Riverside Park, Brookline Memorial Park and Paul J. Sciullo II Memorial Field; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation for the work they do on and off the ice for the youth in the City of Pittsburgh; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, July 12, 2016, to be “Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
