WHEREAS, spring and fall cleanups, traditionally known as Redd Ups in the city of Pittsburgh, have become an event where residents collect litter and connect neighborhoods and demonstrate that "people who care must clean up for people who don't care and litter" ; and,
WHEREAS, Citizens Against Litter has organized Redd Ups twice a year in the spring and fall with the assistance of Pennsylvania Resources, Inc, Allegheny Cleanways, the Clean Pittsburgh Commission, PennDot and Pittsburgh Department of Public Works since 2006, beginning with the uniting of two communities with the Homewood Squirrel Hill Reddup Coalition ; and,
WHEREAS, Citizens Against Litter has set an example for others, influenced other residents, promoted a sense of community, urged city government officials to support cleanup activities and is responsible for the growth of cleanup activities to include many community organizations and government agencies across the region; and,
WHEREAS, since then, the cleanup culture in Pittsburgh has grown exponentially and now includes 90 participating neighborhoods , approximately 10,000 adult and children volunteers and a program for Pittsburgh public, private and parochial schools where upwards of 30 schools and 3,000 kid volunteers participate in Stash the Trash ; and,
WHEREAS, communities across Pittsburgh will be having cleanups in March, April and May with the east end neighborhoods of Homewood, Shadyside and South Point Breeze scheduled for Saturday, April 16, 2011, and the celebration of Earth Day on April 22, 2011; and,
WHEREAS , Squirrel Hill will be having its Reddup on Sunday, April 10, 2011, where volunteers will meet at the corner of Forbes and Murray and be greeted by long time Redd Up leaders and volunteers, Boris Weinstein, Bicky Goldszer and Barbara Grover before going out into the business districts and residential neighborhoods to "redd up" ; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City if Pittsburgh does hereby commend and congratulate all the volunteers who devote their time and labor to "redd up" the City of Pittsburgh and to those community members in Squirrel Hill for their extraordinary efforts on their upcoming cleanup.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare April 10, 2011, to be "PITTSBURGH SPRING REDDUP DAY" in the City of Pittsburgh.
