WHEREAS, in 2024, it is estimated in the U.S. that there will be 310,720 new cases of invasive breast cancer among women and in 2020 it was estimated that more than 168,000 women were living with metastatic breast cancer; and,
WHEREAS, A Glimmer of Hope Foundation, founded in 1994 by Diana Napper, is a nonprofit dedicated to finding a cure for breast cancer. Ms. Napper created the foundation in honor of her friend Carol Jo Weiss Friedman who lost her battle with breast cancer in 1990; and,
WHEREAS, A Glimmer of Hope is committed to raising funds for cancer research and programs, and most importantly, clinical trial studies in premenopausal breast cancer. Breast cancer in women under 40 is increasing with no government protocols to receive screenings. A Glimmer of Hope Foundation is expanding its effort to a national level to focus more attention on this alarming development; and,
WHEREAS, through various fundraising events they have raised more than $3 million for the cause. One such event is The Race to Beat Breast Cancer 2024, a 5k run/walk to be held October 5 at North Park. All funds donated from their events go to Allegheny Health Network, Magee-Womens Research Institute, the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, and Allegheny General Hospital; and,
WHEREAS, because of generous donations from A Glimmer of Hope Foundation, Magee-Womens Research Institute and UPMC Hillman Cancer Center are now examining a blood drawn test known as ‘liquid biopsy’ which will allow real-time monitoring of the size and severity of breast cancer tumors and their response to therapy. Most recently, $100,000 seed funding was provided to UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh to launch a clinical trial on a vaccine for DCIS breast cancer, which would teach the immune system to identify the pre-cancer cells and attack them before they turn into invasive cancer.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend A Glimmer of Hope Foundation in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare, Tuesday, October 1, 2024 to be “A Glimmer of Hope Foundation Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
